"Yeah, I know what I said, but it wasn't that," Jerry protests, making a face down at her, though it's not like it's visible. He isn't about to step away from her yet to change that, his arm snaking a little further around her waist, holding her close. "Not even close. You really think I would have come all the way up here to ask you to go to a party with me if I didn't want to take you? Now what kind of sense would that make?" He can't possibly fathom why he wouldn't want to go with her, anyway, but she ought to know that. Even when he doubts that what they're saying could be all that serious, though, he isn't about to pretend for a second like what she's said might actually be the case. He's wanted this for too long to do that.
